James Shaffer

Obituary of James R. Shaffer

James R. Shaffer Sr. 84, of Hilton, VA went home to rejoice with his Heavenly Father on May 5th, 2019. James was born November 8th, 1934 in Scott County, VA.  He graduated from Hilton High School in 1952. He attended United Electronics institute where he received an Electronics Technology/ Electronics Technician diploma. James retired from Eastman Kodak after 26 years of service. He was a member of Higher Ground Baptist Church for 27 years. He loved Jesus, and loved to tell everyone how good God had been to him and how richly blessed he was…. and how much he looked forward to going Home.  James loved his “darlin” wife more than anything.  And he also loved his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, all of his family; and airplanes…. HE FINALLY took the ULTIMATE flight. James loved his country and was more than proud to be an American. He was so proud of all his family, and others that served our country.

James was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Shaffer; mother, Minnie Shaffer; brothers, Ralph W. Shaffer, Daniel Shaffer Jr. and second father, Lloyd Shaffer.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Doris Shaffer; children, Sharon King (Barney-deceased), James Shaffer Jr. (Nova), Dale Shaffer (Freida), Sherry Shaffer (Jamie Lawson), Susan Shaffer Creger (George); brother, Ronald Shaffer (Laura Mae); sister, Joyce Meade (David); twenty six grandchildren, Mark King, Ben King (Rachel), Kaila Shaffer, James Daniel Shaffer (Brittney), Jayson Shaffer (Janie), Brian Shaffer, Amber Shaffer Jenkins (Brandon), Buck Eldridge (Danielle), Bryant Eldridge (Katy), Danielle Rowe (Kenny), Trey Lawson, Ashley Lawson, Hailee Creger (Justin Moore), Nikki Lewis Edwards (Walt), Nathan Lewis (Laurel), and Dalson Creger; eleven great grandchildren, Jessica King, Jaylee King, Brayden King, Chasen Clemons, Riley Jenkins, Julianne Eldridge, Vivian Eldridge, Emma Rowe, Carter Rowe,  Baby Shaffer, baby Mia Rowe; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other family.

James’s quirky laugh, fix it all know how, stories, and his one of a kind “elbow dance” will be greatly missed on this side of heaven.

The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Higher Ground Baptist Church, Kingsport, TN.  A funeral service will follow with Pastor Larry Meade officiating. Music will be provided by the Higher Ground Choir and Bobbie McCulley.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11am on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA, with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:15am to go in procession to the cemetery.
