GARNIE MATTHEWS COLLINS
Kingsport- Garnie Matthews Collins,94, of Kingsport, who was born in the Grassy Creek Community of Hawkins County on February 1, 1925 and died peacefully on Wednesday, May 8, 2019. Since September 2017, she has resided at Kingston Center Assisted Living in Duffield, VA. She moved there from Kingsport, TN, where she lived for many years. Garnie loved life and enjoyed sharing memories and laughter with those she met. “Going places” was one of her greatest pleasures: she loved the mountains, the oceans, and the desert but was happy being driven throughout the hills and valleys of East Tennessee and SW Virginia. She is a long-time member of Pine Grove Free Will Baptist Church but attended services in many area churches as long as her health permitted.
Garnie was the daughter of the late Sampson and Bertha Ward Matthews and in addition was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Collins; her son Tommy Collins; her older sisters, Pearl Frazier and Bonnie Williams Ford and her younger sisters, Ada Penley and Dean McAmis,
She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Underwood and her husband, Stanley of Knoxville; her most special friend, Wendell Foulk as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2019 at Pine Grove Freewill Baptist Church, 12720 Horton Hwy, Greeneville, TN. A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m.at Pine Grove Freewill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
