Obituary of John Derek Bailiff

John (Derek) Bailiff age 58, Kingsport, TN passed away Monday, July 15, 2019, to be with his Lord and Savior.

Derek graduated from Farragut High School in 1979 where he played sports and was a talented saxophone player. After high school he met the love of his life, Karen Diane Hackworth, and then they were married in 1980.

They moved to Michigan where he attended an apprentice program to learn the trade as a tool and dye machinist. He had a great teacher and followed in his father’s footsteps. After he received his degree, they moved back to the hills of Tennessee.

They opened the family business, Lynx Machine and Tool Co. in 1984 in Kingsport, TN, servicing the community for over 36 years. He was dedicated to his customers and providing for his family.

His favorite past time was bass fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family. He loved coaching kids in baseball and basketball for the Kingsport Indians. Coaching ball was his greatest passion and encouraging kids for over 30 years. He has been involved in coaching all three of his children and his grandchildren.

Saturday and Sunday afternoons were game day at the Bailiff household. All were invited to spend hours in the man cave to watch Nascar or the Tennessee Volunteers.

His grandparents preceded Derek in death.

Survivors include his wife of thirty-nine years, Karen Diane; parents John and Mary Ellen; daughter, Kristin Burton and her husband Reid; son Brian Bailiff and his wife Candace Bailiff; daughter, Kourtney Shelton and husband Bryce; four grandkids Alyana Bailiff, Kennedy Burton, Liam Bailiff, and Klare Burton, little Charlie Luke Shelton; sister, Marsha Hall, brother Kevin Bailiff and wife Missy Bailiff and numerous nieces and nephews. His own personal guard dog “Lola”.

The family of Derek Bailiff will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2019, at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Kingsport, Tennessee 37660.

The celebration of life will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Reid Burton officiating. In the spirit of his love of sports, the family has requested you wear your favorite team attire.
