Obituary of Steve R. Surgenor

STEVE  SURGENOR

Kingsport-  Steve R. Surgenor, 76, of Kingsport, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday morning (July 30, 2019) at his home following a period of declining health.  He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport and was a graduate of Ketron High School in 1963.  Steve was a veteran of the Army Reserves.  He retired from TN Eastman Chemical Company with 37 years of service in the Power & Services Department.  Following his retirement, he went to work at Preston Place in the maintenance department for 7 years.  Mr. Surgenor volunteered for several years assisting the Sullivan County Rescue Squad and the Kingsport Life Saving Crew.  He had a true passion for history and genealogy and especially liked bluegrass music.  Steve was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church and truly loved his entire family.  He was preceded in death by his parents, George Surgenor, Sr. and Hazel Surgenor; his sister, Mable Surgenor and a brother, George Surgenor, Jr.

Steve Surgenor is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Maxine Russell Surgenor; daughters, Sarah Gregg and husband, Randy, Gwendolyn Surgenor, and Stephanie Jones; his grandchildren, Reagan, Karley, and Makenna Gregg, Ian Jones, and Gibson Fannon; sisters, Evelyn Birchfield and husband, Jim, Mary Alice Kinsler and husband, Larry, Argelene Barnette and husband, Keith; a brother, Michael Surgenor and wife, Frankie along with several nieces a nephews.

A visitation will take place on Friday (August 2, 2019) from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Sunnyside Baptist Church or friends may also call anytime at the residence.  A celebration of life service will be held on Friday (August 2, 2019) at 7 p.m. at Sunnyside Baptist Church with Dr. Roy Graves and Rev. Michael Fleenor, officiating.  Music will be provided by Tina Horne and Tommy Shuler and family.  Honorary pallbearers will be Lee White, Mike Shelton, Jim Ward, Johnny Phillips, Dwain Hittinger, Tommy Shuler, Michael Surgenor, Raymond Hammond, and Charles Shelton. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, P.O.
