Obituary of Douglas "Doug" Dewayne Cox

Douglas (Doug) Dewayne Cox, 71, of Gate City VA, went to be with the Lord Sunday, January 12, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Doug was born in Killeen, TX to Millard and Laura Cox. He grew up in Wallens Creek in Lee County, VA and resided most of his married life in Gate City, VA.

Doug attended and graduated from Jonesville High School and Lee County Vocational School in 1967. He then furthered his education at Wise Technical School in 1969 where he graduated with a degree in Mechanics. He was employed by Eastman Chemical Company and then drafted into the 4th Infantry Division of the Army where he served in the Vietnam War as a Combat Infantry Battalion Member, M-16 Sharp Shooter, and Tank Mechanic. He received multiple awards including the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, Overseas Medal, and Marksmanship Medal for M-16. When he returned home he was re- employed at Eastman Chemical Company as a first class mechanic for 32 years.

Doug loved bass fishing and was a longtime member of Lonesome Pine Bassmasters. He held various leadership positions including President and Secretary. He won multiple tournaments with his brothers and friends. Doug was also a member of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M., of Virginia. There he was a Past Master of Catlett Lodge No. 35 in Gate City, VA.

Doug was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend. He loved the Lord and he was a member of Darthula Baptist Church. He loved spending time with his family and talking to all his friends on the phone.

After he retired, he enjoyed spending time on the lake in his blue Skeeter Bass Boat, riding his Cricket and going on vacations and camping with his wife and family.

In addition to his father, Millard Cox, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith and Kenny Cox.

Survivors include his mother, Laura Golden Cox, his loving wife of 50 years, Linda Gertrude Cox, two daughters, Rebecca Cox McDavid and husband Gary and Crystal Sabra Cox; two sons, Douglas Dewayne Cox II and Michael Ray Cox; one brother, Jim Cox; one granddaughter, Laura Brook McDavid; three grandsons, Tyler Ray Collins, Nathan Indiana McDavid, and Dylan Caleb Cox; Many special nieces and nephews.

The family of Douglas (Doug) Dewayne Cox will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at Carter Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 7 pm with Pastor Layton Bentley officiating. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 11 am Thursday in the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The American Legion Hammond Post #3/265 will accord military honors. Minister, family and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 am Thursday.
