Scott Barger

Obituary of Scott William Barger

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2T 4:6-8

Scott William Barger - On January 24th, after waging a long and courageous battle against a disease that robbed him of the use of his earthly body, a host of angels ushered him into the presence of our Lord until that glorious day when He shall raise him in His glorified body. Praise God he was given this blessed assurance after accepting Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior on November 11, 2018. He was baptized on May 21, 2019.

Scott was born on October 4, 1943 to his late and beloved mother, Bertha Rhea Owen Barger and father, Arthur Eugene Barger.

After high school, Scott went to work for Sprint. His love of traveling led him to purchase a motor home and begin selling custom tailored suits for John H. Daniels in Knoxville Tennessee to funeral directors in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. Scott met and became friends with several funeral directors one of which was Ray Jones who remained a loyal a beloved friend until the end.

In 1977, he purchased the Mountain Empire Restaurant in Weber City which he operated for fifteen years. Scott enjoyed serving his old friends and the many new friends he made over the years. He looked forward to the fellowship with his breakfast club buddies every morning. Sadly, a heart attack brought his restaurant career to an end in 1991.

Shortly before his heart attack, he converted a Van Hool bus into a motor home. Never one to sit still, once he was well enough, he traveled to Kissimmee Florida with a friend to escape the cold winter months and to fill his yearn to travel. On that trip, he became acquainted with George Martin of Martin and Martin Auctioneers and began to go to the company’s auctions. George, his family and employees soon became a cherished second family. He continued to travel to auctions after the onset of his illness in 2012 until he sadly realized that his illness was progressing and he could no longer continue.

Scott was a quiet, kind and hard-working man. He had a tender and generous heart and was always willing to help others in any way he could. He was an avid dog lover and had several adored fur babies over the years. His mother once said that as a child, he brought home every stray he found. He enjoyed spending time boating and riding his Jet Ski on Boone Lake. He also, like his mother, had a passion for horses.

Left to cherish His memory for the remainder of her days on earth is his beloved wife of 37 years, Rita Wolfe Barger. He is also survived by a brother, Gorman Barger and wife Alice, brother-in-law, Sherrill Wolfe, brother-in-law Terry Wolfe and wife, Annette, brother-in-law, Wendell Wolfe; nephews, Jason Barger, Andy Wolfe, Benny Wolfe, and Andrew Wolfe; nieces, Amy Barger, Kristen Napier and Rebecca Wolfe; five great-nieces, five great-nephews; special friends, Betty Gilliam, Peggy Carrier and Kay Wade, several cousins and a host of dear friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 28th at Holston View United Methodist Church followed by a celebration of life at 7:00 with Reverend William Hedrick and Reverend Tim Bellamy officiating. A eulogy will be given by Jeff Martin.
