Obituary of John Dixon
John Dixon, 77, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, GA after a brief illness.
John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle. Everyone who knew him loved him, He will be greatly missed.
John retired as principal from Sullivan South High School in 2001. He worked in the Sullivan County School System for over 38 years. During that time he was head Basketball and Baseball coach for many years at Ketron High School. He was also responsible for starting girls’ softball at Ketron in 1980.
He served from 1989 – 2002 on the TSSAA Legislative council. He also served as Sullivan County Commissioner in the early 80’s also on Board of Directors for Knoxville TVA Credit Union.
He was an active member of Homeland Baptist Church, Kingsport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jonas Alvin and Lola Martin Dixon; brother, James Lowell Dixon and wife Ruth Dixon.
He is survived by his wife Judy Dixon; daughter, Vicki Houston (Brian); sons, David Dixon (Wendy) and Alex Dixon; step-daughters, Melissa Light (Jason) and Lori Stokes (Robert); grandchildren, Josh Houston (Brenda), Jared Houston, Ashley Rush (Cody), Patton Stokes, Holden Light; great grandchildren, Luna Houston, Violet Houston, Lily Rush, Lola Rush and Evelyn Rush; nieces, Emma Norris, Ethel Fowler; several great nieces and great nephews; special best buddy, Benji.
The family will receive friends from 2 pm to 5 pm on Sunday November 3, 2019 at Homeland Baptist Church or anytime at the residence.
A funeral service will follow at 5 pm with Rev. Terry Browder officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 12 pm Tuesday at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Rev. Ray Amos officiating. Pallbearers will be Grady Vaughn, Tyler Norris, Aaron Norris, Sammy Norris, Josh Houston, Jared Houston, Patton Stokes, Holden Light.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Homeland Baptist Church, Building Fund, 2504 Hawaii Street, Kingsport, TN 37660.
