Obituary of Ruby Junell Powers Amyx

Ruby Junell Powers Amyx went to meet Jesus in her eternal heavenly home on August 6, 2014 at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital after a brief illness. Ruby was born December 26, 1929 to Carrie and Walter Powers on Hazel Mountain, Virginia. She was raised by her grandparents Paris and Causby LaForce. She moved to Kingsport, where she has resided since 1947. Ruby was married to Dan H. Amyx on October 24, 1949 and they were married for 63 years. She was a homemaker, working hard to raise her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her. She was a sweet woman and loved talk with friends and family. She loved to cook and can foods and had a reputation for making the best chicken and dumplings. She also loved her flowers. She loved God and listening to gospel music. Ruby attended Pleasant View Baptist Church, Kingsport. She loved her family immensely and it was evident through her words and actions. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Gary Casey, Darlene Spivey, RN and to the doctors and nurses at Wellmont ER, CICU and W-3 for their compassion and care. Mrs. Amyx was preceded in death by her parents Carrie LaForce Powers, Walter & Hazel Powers; husband Dan Amyx; brothers Edward and Johnny Powers; sister Lylla Elswich; grandsons Gregory and Nathan Castle; son-in-laws Houston Harrison and Larry Hensley. Ruby is survived by daughters, Sandra (William Gale) Castle, Charlotte Hensley and Jacqueline (Jeffery) Housewright; five grandchildren, Sabra (Danny) Harrison, Christopher (Melissa) Castle, Jason "Bo" (Brandy) Castle, Miranda (John) Thomas and Mirada (Trevor) Dunford; 20 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and expecting another one in November; sisters Lora Sarver of Louisville, Ky, Trula Wood of Burr Ridge, Ill., Jean Sutherland and Evelyn (OD) Amos of Cleveland, Va, brothers Marvin Powers and Bobby Powers of Cleveland, Va, a special sister-in-law that was like a sister Margaret Dickenson of Coeburn, Va, special friends Mr. and Mrs. Charles Callahan; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 pm Friday August 8, 2014 at Carter Trent, 520 Watauga St., Kingsport, TN. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Wayne Baker and Rev. Brian Capps officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 am Saturday, August 9, 2014 at East Lawn Memorial Park with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating. Pallbearers will be Trevor Dunford, John Thomas, Cody Harrison, Dustin Harrison, Ronnie Busick, and Matt Laughlin. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Callahan, William Castle, Jeffery Housewright and Clyde Busick. Family members and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Carter Trent is serving the Ruby Amyx family.
