Obituary of Velma Roberts McDavid

Velma Roberts McDavid, 88, of Gate City passed away (Sunday April 6, 2014) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Sneedville, TN, June 15, 1925, she was the last of the original 13 descendants of Phillip and Cornelia Roberts. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who always had a smile that warmed everyone's heart. Velma made hundreds of afghans, lap covers and shawls in personal colors for everyone who requested. She was an active member and Sunday school teacher at Hiltons Memorial United Methodist Church until her health failed. A born again Christian from an early age, she continued to read her Bible daily and prayed every night until her death. In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her son, Joel Roberts McDavid She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Edwin "Ted" McDavid; son, Reve McDavid and wife Vanessa, Johnson City; daughter, Alethea Henderson and husband Jim, Gate City; five grandchildren, Laura McDavid, Jeff Henderson and wife Kim, Lisa Harrison and husband Gabe, Will McDavid and Noel McDavid; seven great grandchildren, Josh and Aaron Henderson, Matthew and Andrew Mathes, Zack Harrison and Cooper and Callie McCurry and a host of nieces and nephews. Velma was blessed to have loving caregivers in Marie, Robin, Lisa, Roma and Wilma. She also had a precious nurse in Debbie Hawk, while she was in ICU. The family will receive friends from 1:30 till 3:00pm Tuesday (April 8th, 2014) at Scott County Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 3pm with Rev. Will Shewey and Rev. Mark Kilbourne officiating. Burial will follow at Holston View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeff Henderson, Will McDavid, Josh Henderson, Aaron Henderson, Matthew Mathes and Gabe Harrison. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Henderson, Allen Greene, Shannon Greene, Phil Greene and Bruce Trent In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hiltons Memorial United Methodist Church building fund 2869 Hilton Road Gate City, VA 24251 .
