Obituary of Mary Ruth Whitmore Cox

Mary Ruth Whitmore Cox, 84, of Kingsport passed away (February 4th, 2014) at her home. She was born in Scott County, VA and graduated from Shoemaker High School in Gate City. She was married for 42 years to her husband, Charles Clinton Cox. They met and married in Kingsport and later moved to the Detroit, Michigan area. After her husband's death, she returned to Kingsport. She was retired from JC Penney. She was a former member of Marble Point Church and in recent years transferred membership to Fort Robinson Baptist Church. While Mrs. Cox enjoyed activities such as gardening, sewing, crafts and projects around her home, she treasured time with family and friends. She enjoyed trips with her sisters, brothers and sisters in law to places such as Emerald Isle, Myrtle Beach and Pigeon Forge. She also traveled back to Michigan to visit her daughter and grandchildren making trips to destinations including Mackinac Island. She enjoyed shopping trips with her daughters to a variety of locations. Mrs. Cox took pleasure in traveling to other places and seeing new things. Mrs. Cox had a very close relationship with her daughters and granddaughters. She was a vital part of their lives and delighted in their joys and comforted them in their sorrows. Her unique sense of humor, compassionate nature and genuine loving kindness is treasured by her family. These qualities were demonstrated in no greater act than in the care she gave to her son, Charles Jr. (Chucky) for 18 years as he battled Muscular Dystrophy. His loss remained in her heart. In recent years, Mrs. Cox was proud and intensely delighted in becoming a great grandmother to Izzy, Maddy and Henning. She was preceded in Death by Husband Charles Clinton Cox; Son Charles Clinton (Chucky) Cox, Jr.; Son in Law Danny Bishop Parents James Henley and Martha Roberta Whitmore; Siblings Dexter, Winfred, James, Bobby, John Edward, Ernest and Iva Whitmore She is survived by her Daughters, Debbie Bishop Donna (Rev. Roland) Troike Granddaughters Kate (Joel) Hagen, Emily (Jarl) Olsen, Step Grandson Chris (Jessica) Bishop; Great Grandchildren, Izabelle Hagen, Madeline Hagen and Henning Olsen; Step Great Granddaughter Jaiden Bishop; Sister Inez Bishop Brother, Billy Joe (Frances) Whitmore; Sister in Law, Maryann Whitmore; Several nieces and nephews The family will receive friends from 5 till 7pm Friday (February 7th, 2014) at Scott County Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 7pm with Rev. Randy Pressnell officiating along with personal contributions from several members of the family. A graveside service will be conducted at 11am Saturday (February 8th, 2014) at Tri Cities Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
