Shirley was a one-of-a-kind woman that we all loved. She and I worked at the Gate City Post office together for many years and she set an example for everyone with her work ethics, dedication and loyalty. Her sense of humor and laughter was contagious and she looked on the bright side of things even when they didn't look so bright at times! Being a mom and caregiver for her son, David, she reported to work at 6 am, worked sometimes till 5 and 5:30, go home and take care of David and do it all over again the next day. That is what amazed me and what I admired about her was that she never complained. She had such strength inside and out! If you ask her for her opinion, she was honest and would tell you and was a friend to so many. She talked about her children and was so proud of her grandchildren in what they were doing and accomplishing. Shirley had a green thumb and would bring the prettiest flower arrangements that she cut from her own flower garden to share with all of us and the customers! I have so many sweet, funny and special memories of her and I feel so blessed to have known her.
